"Unnumbered through the Ages"
Anthem for Choir and Organ

Notes

"Unnumbered through the Ages" is an expanded hymn verse anthem for SATB choir and organ, based on an original text and melody, that celebrates the feast of All Saints.

A bold fanfare introduces the first verse, which is sung in unison, and is followed by an organ interlude that presents a counter-theme sixteen measures in length. A motivic transition builds and modulates to the second verse, in which paired voices present the hymn tune, simultaneous with the counter-theme’s appearance in the organ. The opening fanfare returns to herald the third verse, which is characterized by alternations of phrases of the hymn tune with brief fanfares that recall the opening flourishes, as well as motives derived from the counter-theme. A brief coda sets the traditional text of ‘Amen’ in an imitative stretto, shared in turn by all the voices and the organ.

While the text of the first verse celebrates the heritage of the biblical saints, the second addresses the source of their vision and strength. The third verse suggests that for all who walk in the enlightened paths of the saints, a new day of peace will dawn where the spirit of the Lord will again live and bring renewed light.

While appropriate for celebrations of the feast of All Saints, the imagery of light and enlightenment makes "Unnumbered through the ages" appropriate for the season of Epiphany as well.

Although conservative in terms of the technical demands made on the vocal ensemble and organist, "Unnumbered through the ages" will come to life when a large instrument is available, particularly where there is a solo or fanfare trumpet for the flourishes, and solo stops with unique characteristics to present the countertheme in its appearances.
