MirrorriM
and SonataNotes
Perspectives for Carillon is a set of compositions in a contemporary idiom that share thematic and stylistic links. The collection includes Mirrorrim, Sonata, Fugue, Abracadabra, Serenade, and Passacaglia. The latter three works are published by The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, and Fugue is unpublished.
The first of the series, Mirrorrim, presents two of Perspectives’ three associated themes in the format of a binary structure: at its midpoint, it reflects backward on itself (as does its title), note for note and rhythm for rhythm. Its harmonic language drifts in and out of impressionistic and free octatonic tonalities. Above all, it is a contrapuntal work that makes use of thematic overlap (imitation and stretto), melodic inversion, augmentation, and mirror and retrograde.
Sonata, the most recent of Perspectives, is set in a traditional single-movement sonata form (with an optional repeat of the exposition section). Its first thematic group is based on the opening material of Mirrorrim , while its second theme is drawn from Fugue and Abracadabra.
Sonata makes considerable technical demands on the performer with its driving rhythms, use of double pedaling, and its unceasing movement from beginning to end. The potential for dramatic and energetic expression poses a challenge to any who would undertake its realization on the carillon.
The music of Perspectives offers a marked contrast to the main body of music for carillon featured in this series, with venturesome harmonic languages and tonalities, large-scale formal structures, and advanced technical demands.
