A Brief Mass Setting
(Rite II)
(for congregational use)
"Glory to God in the highest" (p. 1-4)I. Gloria
(9 pages)
Notes
A Brief Mass Setting for Voices and Organ provides a sonorous but straightforward vehicle for unison congregational singing of various portions of the Eucharist. In all movements, the sung melodies are doubled in the organ accompaniment in order to provide strong support.
The Gloria appears in a thematic ABA' format, with an Amen added. The Kyrie ("Lord, have mercy") and Alleluia share one musical setting, for purposes of structural unification and for simplification of the congregational learning process. Likewise, the Memorial Acclamation ("Christ has died...") and Amen are musically similar.
The setting of the Sanctus ("Holy...") borrows freely from the thematic materials presented in the "Lamb of God" text (from the mid-section of the Gloria). The full setting of the Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God") also echoes the setting of the same text from the Gloria.
A Brief Mass Setting can be accomodated by a smaller or larger instrument and makes only moderate demands on the organist. The modest vocal ranges and recurring thematic materials render the sung portions relatively unassuming and easily learned by a singing congregation. At the same time, the mass setting offers a stately and eloquent enhancement of the celebration of the Eucharist.
